NGC 55 or Caldwell 72 belongs to the closest galaxy cluster beyond our local group with Andromeda, M33, Barnard, and small and large clouds. It belongs to the Sculptor group along with NGC 253, NGC 300, NGC 247. It is 15 degrees from the galactic South Pole.

In a 2006 article, Van de Steene et. ali. calculated the distance of NGC 55 as similar to NGC 300 based on the luminosity of planetary nebulosities measured from OIII instruments with a 2.2m telescope. This suggests that NGC 55 and NGC 300 are likely gravitationally bound.

Em um artigo de 2006, Van de Steene et. ali. calcularam a distância de NGC 55 como semelhante a NGC 300 com base na luminosidade de nebulosidades planetárias medidas a partir de instrumentos OIII com um telescópio de 2,2m.
